Series | THE EXCELLENCE IN YOU
2 Peter 1:3-11 NLT — “3 By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. 4 And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires. 5 In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. 8 The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins. 10 So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things, and you will never fall away. 11 Then God will give you a grand entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
How do we seek excellence?
“Because of His glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises” which “enable us to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires”which are not excellent.
So how do we seek excellence?
We “make every effort to respond to God’s promises.” We “supplement our faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.”
Because the more we have moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, patient endurance, godliness, brotherly affection, and love for EVERYONE, the more excellent we will be.
The more we seek after the things of God, the more we will know Jesus and radiate God’s glory. And that is how we seek excellence.
How in this time of isolation and rampant worry can we seek after this excellence?
What does excellence look like when our lives are turned upside down, when our expectations are upended, when our activities are halted and replaced with other things to do?
Where is the excellence in that?
The beginning of excellence in this time is in being secure in Christ in the midst of so much anxiousness. We need to ground our focus on God, not on the things of this world. We certainly might be concerned about all that is going on, but anxious should not be our way. We can be excellent in Christ by taking him at his word and not being anxious about anything…and that means anything, even COVID-19.
How do we seek excellence?
We seek God…in His Word, in prayer, in silence with the Spirit.
We don’t seek excellence by being caught up in the world. Worldly excellence will fade. Only excellence steeped in God’s way will stand.
